Randalls RIP

January 31st 2014 was a sad day for Uxbridge as one of its oldest retailers closed its doors after 120 years of trading in the town.

IMG_20150131_160108As you can see from these photos, the store had been pretty much cleared out and looked a sad sight.IMG_20150131_160318

The menswear department still had plenty of unsold stock, and I spotted a real bargain, a Viyella shirt that was £60, reduced to £12. Happy with my purchase, but sad to see the store closing, I noticed the owner, Sir John Randall, and had a word with him. I asked him to sign my Randalls carrier bag, which he kindly agreed to do!

So, at 5.30pm the store closed, and Uxbridge said farewell to this much loved store. The only good news is the building, a great example of late 1930s ‘Deco’ has a grade 2 listing. Rumours were that John Lewis were interested, however nothing has been confirmed.

I will leave you with some photos I took yesterday.

This article from the Guardian goes into some more detail about John Randall’s thoughts on the closure-
